She pretends that it was her who was Pips benefactress, and she is controlling from the very start, for instance when Pip comes to play at Stats House; she mutters witch-like incantations at him: Play, play, play And love her, love her, love her Pip falls madly in love with Estella, something that Miss Having in her warped frame of mind, enjoys. She relishes the fact that Pip has fallen for Estella and is enjoying seeing some-one love another person so strongly only to have their heart broken as she had many years before. Dickens makes a very interesting comparison between Miss Having and the convict Magnetic, who it turns out is Estella father, in that they were both cheated by Composers. However, there is a stark contrast in their chose n methods of revenge. She chooses to become manipulative and evil towards Pip and Estella. Whereas Magnetic remembers Pips kindness and chooses to be benevolent towards Pip in order to ease him towards the position of a gentleman. Dickens uses clever reference to color throughout his description of Miss Having. The white of her clothes, which represents purity along with the yellow of decay. When Miss Having is burning from setting her clothes on fire, the red of the flames could be seen as a representation of love. It is interesting that earlier in the text she is referred to as the witch of the place and that the conflagration could be likened to a witch being burned at the stake. The reader can recognize the comparison between her being aflame and the emotion of love which can be said to be a burning desire. This is the last reference to her being a witch-like figure in the story, and in ways can be seen to be her being cleansed by fire, a biblical reference. On Pips last visit to Cats, he is no longer a young boy, he is an adult and has a different perspective of the world. He is older and wiser and the roles of he and Miss Having have reversed. He has come to ask a favor of her, namely to borrow some money, rather than when he was young and she always asked things of him. Interestingly although she asked things of him, it was always in a demanding way and she had to be in control. Dickens ensures that the reader considers whether Miss Hafniums fate was deserved. She was indeed cruel to both Pip and Estella, however she had led a very sad and unfulfilled life and her life ended in a very cruel ay. She did in the end appear to find a friend in Pip and begs his forgiveness for her maltreatment of him. Pip like a true gentleman does in fact forgive her before she dies. A mind mortally hurt and diseased this is perhaps the most significant quote in the novel. It articulates the vital complexity of her character, describing her as a victim who became an antagonist as a consequence of her maltreatment during childhood by her father, and during womanhood by Composers. Miss Having is presented as a mysterious presence by primarily not being revealed until late in the book. However, her obsession with revenge and her likeness to a witch also are contributory factors, and conjure images and perceptions in the readers head of what Miss Having is really like and her appearance. Once revealed, she is still retains a mysterious presence especially when she is killed by being set alight a witch-like way to die, and in her time of dying she finally apologizes to Pip and Estella for all the wrong she has done to them. Blade Runner Analysis essays In the science of studying media and communication, there are many different ways of approaching the subject in which you are going to analyse. That is to analyse advertisements, texts, TV-series, films etc. and other media. My task for this assignment is to give an analysis of a film of my choice. A film is a quite complex medium to analyse; thus it is important to have analysis "tools" or some criteria to follow. In my analysis I am asked to consider the use and resolution of binary opposition and through analysis of narrative structure. In my assignment I am going to consider how the couple is represented, and how the narrative structure and binary oppositions have influence on the plot of the story. The film I have chosen is the old science fiction film noir "Blade Runner". During this analysis, I will use the abbreviation BR when referring to Blade Runner. I have chosen the original version, and not the "Directors cut"- version that were released in 1992. Furthermore, this is a complex movie that I thought would be interesting to use for an analysis. It is a dark, futuristic science fiction movie, which is said to be "a hybrid of science fiction, film noir, detective thriller, bounty-hunter western and love story" (Gianetti, L., 1999, p. 313). Thus it is a quite complex film, and there are lots of things to consider. Moreover, the complexity is due to the fact that there are more than one possible plot in the movie. In my opinion the most important plot is that androids or replicants vs humans. Deckards dramatic need in BR is to haunt and kill four "nexus 6" replicants that is considered a great danger to humans. Another plot is the romance between Deckard (human) and Rachel (android or replicant). This is more of a sub-plot. Further, there is the question if Deckard himself is a replicant. Biography of Carl Sagan, Astronomer of the People Astronomer and author Carl Sagan (November 9, 1934 - December 20, 1996) burst into public consciousness as the star and producer of the TV series Cosmos. He was a prolific researcher in astronomy  as well as a science popularizer who sought to educate the public about the universe and the value of the scientific method.   Early Years Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sagan grew up with a strong interest in the planets, stars, and science fiction. His father, Samuel Sagan, immigrated from what is now Ukraine and worked as a garment worker. His mother, Rachel Molly Gruber, encouraged his great interest in science. Sagan often cited his parents influence on his career, saying that his father influenced his imagination and his mother urged him to go to the library to find books about stars. Professional Life After graduating from high school in 1951, the young Sagan headed the University of Chicago for a degree in physics. At the University of Chicago, he took part in chemistry research about the building blocks of life. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics in 1960. Sagan left Illinois and began working at University of California - Berkeley, where he worked with a team to  build an instrument for a NASA mission to Mars called Mariner 2. In the 1960s, Sagan moved to Harvard University, where he worked at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. There, he focused his research more closely on planetary science, with a particular interest in Venus and Jupiter. Sagan later moved again to Cornell University, where he served as director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagans work with NASA continued. He was a principal advisor for the Viking missions and worked on the landing site selection. He also was instrumental in a project to put messages from humanity aboard the Pioneer and Voyager probes to the outer solar system. In 1976, he became  the David Duncan Professor of Astronomy and Space Sciences, a chair he held until his death. Research Interests and Activism Throughout his career, Carl Sagan remained deeply interested in the possibility of life on other worlds.   Throughout his work with NASA and the U.S. space program, he tirelessly promoted the ideas behind the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, colloquially known as SETI. Sagan worked on  several collaborative experiments, which ultimately demonstrated that, when exposed to ultraviolet light, mixtures of amino acids and nucleic acids could be produced in  conditions much like those of early Earth. Carl Sagan conducted early research on climate change. One of his studies showed that the high temperatures on the surface of Venus could be attributed to a runaway greenhouse effect. Throughout his career, Sagan continued his scientific research, ultimately publishing more than 600 papers. Throughout his work, he advocated for scientific skepticism and healthy reasoning, promoting skepticism as an alternative to belief systems of politics and religion. Sagan was also  an anti-war activist. He  studied the potential impact of nuclear war and advocated for nuclear disarmament. Science as a Way of Thinking As an avid skeptic and agnostic, Sagan promoted the scientific method as a tool for better understanding the world. In his book  Demon-Haunted World, he laid out strategies for critical thinking, deconstructing arguments, and testing claims. Sagan published a number of other science books aimed at a lay audience, including The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence, and Brocas Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science.  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1980, Carl Sagans:  Cosmos: A Personal Voyage premiered on television.  The premiere turned Sagan into a well-known science popularizer. The show was aimed at a general audience, with each  episode  focusing on a different aspect of scientific discovery or exploration.  Cosmos  received two Emmy Awards.   Later Years and Legacy In the 1990s, Carl Sagan was diagnosed with a blood condition called myelodysplasia. He received three bone marrow transplants and ongoing treatment, continuing to work on his research and writing even as the condition worsened. At age 62, Sagan died of pneumonia associated with his condition. Sagan left a long-lasting legacy in the fields of astronomy and science education. Several awards for science communication are named after Carl Sagan, included two given by the Planetary Society. Before the tragic events of September 11, 2001, we have had a right to safe society meaning the right to live freely in this America with no interruption with an orderly society free from interference from outside influences. In this case on September 11, 2001 those rights got infringed upon with the attack on America. This showed that for one day in 2001 that America was not so superior. The right of living in a safe society was now a fore gone formality. The right to work was not the same as well meaning in reference to those who were working that morning of the attack. Just when I thought it was safe to go to work I was wrong  Ã‚   with one day that changes my life. I wrestled with this profiling of all actions of the political nature.    A web site called the ABC federation, which supports political prisoners as a totally autonomous unified group, which looks to grow collectively on struggles against government policies. They informed me that Political Prisoners act to carry out support of legitimate struggles for self-determination or for opposing the illegal policies for the government along with its political sub-divisions. In the Common Dreams New Center web site reported a study on what a terrorist was. It explains to me that a terrorist is one who acts or engages in an act of terrorism.

1. What are Lancaster’s concerns for the future of the Eastern Hemisphere Organization? What problems does he hope to address with ADP? In 1995 when Bill Lancaster was appointed the President of Black and Decker Eastern Hemisphere his initial impression about the organization was depressing. There were some major concerns one of them is the management style that was followed. The current managers were using the Management by Objective (MBO) type plan which is believed to be outdated system that had been replaced in the US some time ago. There were some bad managers and some bad management styles. It was obvious to have lack of growth and development. These concerns led him to see a dark future. These problems require immediate attention and correction to save the organization from its negative impact. ADP means Appraisal Development Plan. Lancaster wants to use ADP to overcome above stated problems and move to the path of development. The expectations of Lancaster from ADP are that it would be able to address the problem of getting the ill informed MBO reviews, as in MBO the managers only see very few aspects of their employee’s job performance. In MBO managers meet with employees on an individual basis but it was not fruitful as managers would be ill informed and just make up a list of suggestions. It is expected that new ADP system would solve some if not all the management problems. 2. What concerns do Asian managers have about ADP? Asian managers such as Anita Lim who had been with Black & Decker for six years were opposed to the introduction of the U.S version of ADP in the Eastern Hemisphere. Her first concern was that Asians might not willingly open up the way Americans do. They might not give critical feedback about their bosses. She also challenges the confidentiality of the ADP system – No matter what a boss says about the feedback being anonymous an Asian might not believe it. Lastly she thinks that a change from MBO to ADP is quite radical and Asians would not support radical changes of this nature. There were some more concerns that came up such as linguistic barrier concerns and cultural barriers in relation to how Asians compete with each other and the relationship they had with their seniors. 3. What action should Lancaster take concerning the ADP initiative in the Eastern Hemisphere Organization? Lancaster has some challenging options in front of him on how to progress further. One is to wait, the other is to implement ADP fully and last is to go with Lim’s recommendation to apply partial ADP model. If he waits to implement ADP he is allowing the Eastern Hemisphere sink further into low productivity and hence low profitability. Making Dreams Reality Trudeau’s Just Society Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Canada’s 15th prime minister, has always dreamed of Canada becoming a united society. This idea was announced and introduced after his candidacy in 1968. He described his idea of a Just Society as one that : one in which all of our people will have the means and the motivation to participate, in which personal and political freedom will be more securely ensured than it has ever been in the past, in which the rights of minorities will be safe from the whims of intolerant majorities, in which those regions and groups which have not fully shared in the country’s affluence will be given a better opportunity. †[1] Trudeau wanted Canada to become a united society that is independent from Britain and the U. S. A[2] The term ‘Just Society was used in 1968 during ‘Trudeaumania’ .The ‘Just Society’ Trudeau dreamed of was also a country that will be bicultural because o f its justice toward society. A society with justice means that every individual will have freedom, but they will also have responsibilities. Justice also gives people rights that must not be abused. In order to assure equality among citizens, people should help protect those in society who are vulnerable to subjection or prejudice. [3] Trudeau was an efficient prime minister who greatly changed Canada and turned it into a ‘Just Society’Trudeau, unlike the previous prime ministers who made minimal attempts to make Canada an independent country from Britain and the U. S, applied many changes that allowed Canada to be independent. To begin, one of Trudeau’s contributions to Canada was in 1976 when Trudeau successfully allowed Canada to be a part of G7, a group of seven major economic powers[4]. This was Canada’s own choice and did not require Britain’s approval in order to join. Moreover, in 1982 Trudeau passed a bill called Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This was a huge step for Canada’s independence.The Canadian Charter allowed Canada to have fundamental freedom, democratic rights, and more which led to the Constitution Act of 1982. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom guaranteed the rights and freedoms to a certain extent, which allowed Canadians to make more of their own decisions while regarding the law. Finally, on November 5, 1982, 114 years after the Confederation, Trudeau and nine other premiers made The Constitution Act which would finally allow Canada’s independence. This meant that Canada was free from British and American legislation. 5] The Constitution Act was signed by Queen Elizabeth II to make it official and it granted Canadians Democratic Rights, Mobility Rights, Legal Rights, Equality Rights, Official Languages of Canada Minority Language, and Educational Rights. [6] Any changes required the approval of the Canadian Parliament and 7 of the 10 provincial legislatures that make up at least 50% of overall population of Canada. [7] In doing this, Canada opened its doors to others ensuring everyone receives an equal chance. In conclusion, Trudeau made various changes that increased Canada’s independence.The Contribution Act of 1982 was merely a part of Trudeau’s dream of a ‘Just Society’, he also wanted Canada to be a bicultural country where everyone was welcomed no matter what their nationality, or background was. First, due to the fact that Trudeau was both a French and English, he wanted Canada to become a bilingual country. [8] Soon he enforced bill 22 which was a part of the Constitution Act and was under the name of the Official Languages of Canada and Minority Language Educational Rights. [9] This made Canada a more united country.Also, before the bill was passed most of Canada’s citizens were divided into two groups. One half of the country was the French Canadians, while the other half were the English Canadians. Trud eau wanted to live in a country in which French Canadians chose to live among English Canadians and English Canadians chose to live among French Canadians without abandoning their cultural heritage. The bills which Trudeau created made French and English the official languages of Canada. In Bill 22 it was made sure that French is the official language of Quebec and ensured that newcomers will become a part of the French-speaking community.In addition, during the Constitution Conference one of the decisions made was that French-speaking Canadians outside of Quebec were expected to be treated equally to English-speaking Canadians. [10] Trudeau welcomed all and introduced the immigration act in 1976. The act gave more power to the provinces to set their own immigration laws. Soon Canada’s population grew because of this because immigrants felt safe and welcomed. In doing this Canada is open to others and is able to communicate more with other countries.This allowed Canadaâ€℠¢s economy to grow and be more successful. In conclusion, Trudeau also promoted equality within the Canada. To further ensure equality within the country, Trudeau wanted to apply political equalities. Firstly, Trudeau was neither a dictator nor a fascist leader. The â€Å"Just Society† Trudeau dreamed of allowed everyone to have freedoms that he was not intending to ever take away. Trudeau did not want to cause any problems due to extreme control such as the Holocaust of 1941-1945. Also, Trudeau wanted Canada to be a democratic country.He wanted everyone to have an equal opportunity and believed that the growing gap between the rich and poor between his home and Third World countries should be reduced. When Trudeau was the justice minister he introduced legislation that expanded grounds for divorce and abortions and stopped penalties for homosexual acts between two people. When Trudeau was still the justice minister of Canada, he stated, â€Å"There's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation. †[11] Lastly, Trudeau often referred to the Constitution Act in order to lead his nation because it allowed Democratic Rights, Mobility Rights, and Legal Rights.The Democratic Rights allowed every Canadian citizen to vote, Mobility Rights allowed every citizen the right to leave, enter or remain in Canada, and Legal Rights allowed the right to life, liberty and security of a person. In doing this, Trudeau made every Canadian feel like any other person. In conclusion, Trudeau gave Canadians many opportunities to be equal as a nation. In end, the â€Å"Just Society† Trudeau dreamed of, was achieved through many methods and he managed to do many amazing things and turn the ‘Just Society’ into a reality.He transformed Canada into a new country, a new nation completely independent from the British and Americans. Teacher-student relationship has numerous benefits for the teacher and the student in the classroom. There are different types of relationships between the teachers and the students. They include that of being a mentor, being friends or a parental figure. However, in the recent decade, a new type of relationship that is unlawful and illegal has developed. When the connection between the student and the teacher starts being that of more than friends, it disadvantages the student. The teacher-student†¦ 2.
